A joint initiative by our College Engagement Team and NHS Education for Scotland is paving the way for international medical graduates (IMGs) in Scotland to access additional support to help them settle into their new roles within the NHS.
We welcome the publication yesterday of the Scottish Government’s five year NHS Recovery Plan, which outlines ambitious targets and actions to address some of the key challenges in our health service. There are many positive initiatives in this plan and it is encouraging to see a realistic time scale.

On the 23rd March this year we closed the doors to our College buildings in Glasgow. With the spread of COVID-19 on the rise, the Scottish Government joined with the other administrations across the UK to put the country on lockdown. Offices and non-essential shops were closed, along with public spaces such as libraries, communal parks and playgrounds, and places of worship.

The four Surgical Royal Colleges are pleased to announce that the September 2020 MRCS Part A examination will be delivered remotely as an online assessment. As a consequence, the capacity of this examination will no longer be limited by COVID-19 restrictions and candidates will be able to sit the examination without the requirement to travel to an examination centre. The format and syllabus of the examination will remain the same. The examination will take place on 15 September 2020 only; all candidates who have applied to sit the MRCS Part A in September, along with those who have been transferred from the April 2020 diet, will be accommodated on this date.
Reporting of Deaths and Disease: Healthcare workers and COVID-19

Every doctor responsible for issuing a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death has a legal obligation to notify the Procurator Fiscal in Scotland as the Lord Advocate noted in his guidance of 15 May. In England and Wales deaths of cases in which ‘the registered medical practitioner suspects that the person’s death was due to … disease attributable to any employment held by the person’ should report the death to the Coroner. Unfortunately at the onset of the pandemic NHS guidance on excess COVID deaths and a BMJ editorial on COVID-19 death certification failed to mention this.

Trainees will be aware that possession of a current ALS certificate is a mandatory requirement for training in the acute medical specialties, including core medical training/internal medicine training. As the pandemic with COVID-19 has struck, ALS courses have been suspended preventing trainees from immediate renewal of their certification and preventing others whose ALS certification has lapsed for a more prolonged period, from renewing. The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges has written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Secretary of State for Health (attached) calling on them to urgently address the pensions tax issue that is causing many of the UK’s most senior doctors to reduce their overtime or leave the NHS altogether.
Last week our UK-based Fellows began to receive their new Fellowship Pack from the college, containing our new Fellowship Pin, the latest edition of “voice” (our membership magazine) and some information on the recent work of the college.
Each year, members of College Council and Faculty Boards participate in a service at Glasgow Cathedral to mark the anniversary of the founding of the College and afterwards, to lay a wreath on the tomb of Maister Peter Lowe which is in the Cathedral graveyard. This is a colourful occasion including a formal gowned procession.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is an important part of professional practice which is reviewed annually at Appraisal and is necessary for Revalidation. For Physicians this is a Federation of Royal Colleges of Physicians’ function with an approval system for external CPD and online diary.

Each year the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow partners with the Royal College of Physicians of London (RCPL) and the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE) to conduct a census of the UK’s physician workforce. The aim of the census, which is carried out by the RCP London’s Medical Workforce Unit, is to provide the three colleges, our partners and others with robust data on the state of the consultant and higher specialty trainee (HST) physician workforce in the UK.
