Dr Eric Topol to discuss future of AI in personalised medicine at Interactive Cardiology global conference
Eric Topol, a global leader in cardiovascular medicine, is set to give the keynote lecture at an international meeting of heart specialists on Friday 8 March.
Dr Topol is the Executive Vice President and Professor of Molecular Medicine at the Scripps Research Institute in San Diego, which has been at the forefront of medical breakthroughs since 1924.
His keynote lecture will explore findings from his research into the multimodal capabilities of AI in medicine, advancing personalised care and expanding possibilities for treatment without the need for hospital admission. He will also discuss how these tools can be applied to reduce diagnostic errors by providing clinicians with all the information they need in a matter of seconds.
Dr Topol is among the experts speaking at the Interactive Cardiology Conference, being held at the College on Friday 8 March in partnership with the British Cardiovascular Society, the University of Glasgow and the Scottish Cardiac Society.
A practicing consultant cardiologist at the Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, California, Dr Topol has more than 1,300 peer-reviewed articles and is in the top 10 most cited researchers in medicine.
His research explores how new and emerging technologies in medicine can improve patient care. Speaking before the conference, he said: “The overarching goal is to give the gift of time to clinicians and patients and markedly improve the patient-clinician relationship, bring back the humanity in medicine.”
The conference will also hear from leading cardiologists from the UK on advances in heart failure management, structural heart disease, ischaemic heart disease, and atrial fibrillation.
Professor Hany Eteiba, the Royal College’s President Elect, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital and Honorary Professor at the University of Glasgow, said: “Innovation and new technology have transformed cardiology over the last 50 years, saving millions of lives and drastically improving life expectancy and quality of life for those affected by heart conditions.
“We are delighted to be bringing together world experts in Glasgow to discuss the next chapter of innovation to improve heart health for patients around the globe.
“It’s a particular delight to hear from our keynote speaker, Dr Eric Topol, who is a pioneer in the use of new technology in medicine, to discuss his latest research findings.”
In 2019, the UK Government commissioned the landmark Topol Review to prepare the NHS for a digital future, incorporating innovative recommendations to ensure it is a world leader in digital healthcare.
Understanding the importance of this principle, his report led to the launch of the Topol Digital Fellowship to give healthcare professionals the education and training needed to lead digital health transformation in the UK.
Dr Topol is the best-selling author of three books on the future of medicine: The Creative Destruction of Medicine, The Patient Will See You Now, and Deep Medicine: How Artificial Intelligence Can Make Healthcare Human Again.
