The General Medical Council (GMC) today (Tuesday 25th June) published independent research, by Dr Doyin Atewologun and Roger Kline, which explores why some groups of doctors are referred to the regulator more than others.

The General Medical Council (GMC) today (Tuesday 25th June) published independent research, by Dr Doyin Atewologun and Roger Kline, which explores why some groups of doctors are referred to the regulator more than others.

The report states that disproportionate referrals of black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) doctors to fitness to practise processes could be driven by poor induction and support, working patterns which leave them isolated and poor feedback by managers.

“This important report raises some serious issues of concern within the health service. Everyone within the NHS needs to work together to create a more inclusive environment for all staff, where we can learn together from mistakes rather than seeking to apportion blame.

“To this end our College will continue to champion inclusivity at every level of the NHS and beyond.”
