College President, Professor Jackie Taylor has expressed deep concern for our Fellows and Members in Myanmar and their friends and relatives around the world. We do not condone any form of violence and are hopeful that a peaceful settlement can be reached soon. We welcome the assurance from the United Nations that it will do all it can to unite the country.
This political unrest has come at a time when the healthcare workforce in the country is already under enormous pressure in managing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is essential the medical response to the pandemic and the roll out of the vaccination programme is able to continue.
Professor Taylor said: “I know many of our Fellows and Members in Myanmar will already be exhausted and working hard to manage the ongoing pressures of the COVID-19 pandemic. I am personally deeply concerned about the effect on the health workforce in the country of the combined impact of the pandemic and political unrest, and we will continue to do all we can to support our membership.”
