The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow welcomes the COVID-19: Ethical advice and support framework published by the Chief Medical Officer for Scotland today.
The COVID-19 pandemic is expected to result in an increasing demand in patient care, while at the same time reducing the number of staff available due to absences. The entire healthcare system is likely to be impacted, including the capacity to meet the increase in demand in the community and secondary care.
This important framework for healthcare workers and clinicians, provides guidance for those who may be required to deal with complex situations in which additional ethical advice or decision-making support may be required. It provides reasonable, balanced advice for clinicians, recognising that end of life decisions will need to be made involving patients and families and equity of access for all who need care.
