Responding today to the joint press briefing held by Professor Chris Whitty, the Chief Medical Officer and Sir Patrick Valance, the Government’s Chief Scientific Advisor, Professor Jackie Taylor, President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow said:
“Everyone who watched the statements today from the Chief Medical Officer and the Government’s Chief Scientific Advisor will be clear about the significant and urgent challenges that we now all face in staying safe against this pandemic. Failure to take action now would mean a disastrous second spike of COVID-19 cases.
“Our membership work in every part of the NHS across the UK, and we know that without action now this deadly virus will cause further unnecessary death and suffering for many, and would threaten to overwhelm the health service when we are already stretched over the winter period.
“Everyone has a part to play in halting the further spread of this virus. Whether we work in the NHS or are simply members of the public, we must all step up to this urgent responsibility now if a public health disaster is to be averted.”
