Speaking following the resignation of Dr Catherine Calderwood as the Chief Medical Officer for Scotland on the evening of the 5th April, a spokesperson for the College said:
“Social distancing is a vital part of the strategy to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and has to apply to everyone. We all make errors of judgement, but given her public leadership role it is appropriate that Dr Calderwood has resigned from the post of CMO.
“The hard work, commitment and expertise shown by Dr Calderwood in leading the NHS response to COVID-19 in Scotland has been outstanding and our College would like to thank her for her leadership in these testing times. The Realistic Medicine initiative which she has introduced and championed will serve as a lasting legacy.
“It is now important that we look forward and focus all of our energy and skills on working together to support the NHS response in Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom to this current crisis.”
