Obituary: Professor Fazal Ghani

It is with great sadness that the sudden death of Professor Fazal Ghani, Head of Department of Prosthodontics, Dean PG Dental Studies and Coordinator International, Peshawar Dental College was announced on 20 January 2021.

It is with great sadness that the sudden death of Professor Fazal Ghani was announced on 20 January 2021.

Professor Ghani was our first International Dental Advisor in Pakistan and contributed enormously to both the Faculty of Dental Surgery and the College in promoting its activities in Pakistan and the wider international arena.

His career was global in its development. His postgraduate studies were at Eastman Dental Institute London, University College and Middlesex School of Medicine and Dentistry London, University College London (UCL) where he obtained his PhD and MSc. He also enhanced his career studying at Tohoku University Graduate School of Dentistry, Sendai in Japan and Wonkwang University Dental School, South Korea.

In Pakistan he was a renowned and respected teacher. He was a training supervisor for Fellowship in Prosthodontics of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan and has supervised and examined many Prosthodontics Fellowships, MSc, MPhil and PhD candidates.

His own contribution to research is immense, having published more than 120 papers and reviewed more than 500 manuscripts for national and international journals. He was a Member of the Advisory Committees and Boards of Reviewers for many national and international journals. He is the co-author of two textbooks on Prosthodontics. His commitment to further dental education was demonstrated by his worldwide lectures and presentations which contributed greatly to dental education.

In addition, Professor Ghani was Associate Editor of Journal of the Pakistan Dental Association and was the founder Editor-in-Chief, Journal of The Pakistan Prosthodontics Association. He held significant positions in his profession as Immediate Past President of the Pakistan Prosthodontics Association and as Past President of the Pakistan Forum for Restorative Dentistry.

He was a very active Fellow of our Faculty, in addition to his International Advisor role, he was also a regular examiner for the MFDS Examination making regular trips to the College from Pakistan to support the exam.

Professor Ghani is survived by his wife Bushra and his five children.
