ASiT takes the ‘Foundation Skills in Surgery’ Course to Rwanda!

The College has supported the Association of Surgeons in Training to send a small team to Rwanda to hold the first international pilot of its ‘Foundation Skills in Surgery’ (FSS) course in Kigali, Rwanda, East Africa. ASiT seek further help in the form of text books, equipment or funds.

ASiT are excited to announce the first international pilot of our ‘Foundation Skills in Surgery’ (FSS) course in Kigali, Rwanda, East Africa on 13-14th September 2014.

On qualifying, Rwandan doctors start work in basic local community hospitals, often practicing alone as the only doctor. This includes emergency surgery, such as c-sections or appendectomy. Good surgical skills are essential at an early stage!

There are a number of ways you can help:

1) We need your donations!

All money received will be used wholly and directly to support the course’s running costs in Rwanda. We have set up a charity donation page here:

2) We are collecting text books and equipment to donate

If you have anything spare, we would be grateful if you could post or deliver it to:ASiT, 35-43 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London, WC2A 3PE

• Medical/surgical text books
• Surgical kit (particularly sutures, even out-of-date is fine)
• Stethoscopes
• Tendon hammers
• White coats
• Spare scrubs, or scrub caps
• Reflex hammers
• Other essentials include: sterile gloves, non-sterile gloves, gowns and face masks

3) Other sources of funding or equipment

If you know of any other charities or funding bodies that may be interested in supporting this course or donating supplies, please let us know!

We look forward to reporting back on the trip when we return, and we hope this will see the start of regular surgical-trainee led international visits to resource poor settings to run the ASiT FSS course and support local surgeons. Future volunteers are welcome!
