New SIGN Guidelines 142 and 144

Two new SIGN guidelines have been released:

SIGN 142: Management of osteoporosis and the prevention of fragility fractures

This guideline provides evidence-based recommendations covering:

  • best practice in the management of osteoporosis and prevention of fractures
  • risk factors for fracture
  • commonly-used tools for fracture risk assessment
  • approaches to targeting therapy
  • pharmacological, and non-pharmacological treatments to reduce fracture risk in different patient groups
  • treatment of painful vertebral fractures
  • systems of care.

SIGN 144: Glaucoma referral and safe discharge

The guideline provides evidence based recommendations covering:

  • key recommendations
  • risk factors for primary glaucoma
  • primary-care examination and assessment of patients with ocular hypertension or suspected glaucoma
  • criteria for referral to secondary-eye-care services
  • discharge from secondary-eye-care services
  • monitoring at-risk groups
  • provision of information
