College welcomes new NHS England funding

Responding today to the announcement by the Prime Minister of an additional twenty billion pounds of funding for NHS England, Professor David Galloway, the President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow said:

“We absolutely welcome the announcement of this additional funding for the NHS in England, and the commitment to developing a long-term plan for the service. An increase of 3.4 percent is a significant step in the right direction, even though it’s still short of 4 percent increase that Royal Colleges and others have estimated that is necessary to implement modest improvements to the current service for patients.

“It’s now vital that we have a full public debate about the future direction of NHS services. The government must get round the table with Royal Colleges and others so that we can all work together to develop a health service which is fit to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century.”
