The National Wellbeing Hub has launched a webinar programme with a focus on wellbeing for health and social care staff. Sessions include guidance on managing stress, coping with low mood, and managing working parenthood.
In her fortnightly email bulletin to Fellows and Members last week, College President Professor Jackie Taylor, opened with the words, “I’m very tired.” Her sentiments mirror those of so many of her colleagues and peers who have been working relentlessly for months now in hospitals under immense pressure.
Unfortunately, in the short term at least, it looks unlikely that time off to rest and recover is feasible, but we do remain focused and positive that some relief will come when we begin to see the impact of current lockdown restrictions and the vaccination programme combined.
Over the longer term, our College will continue to work hard in speaking up for the profession on the need for meaningful strategies to protect the mental health and wellbeing of healthcare staff. Workforce shortages and rota gaps need to be addressed, consultants must be allowed sufficient time in their working week for professional activities, and we need to increase the number of medical school places to address workforce need. These are all areas we will continue to call for action on.
In the shorter term, we can take personal and collective responsibility for our own wellbeing. Taking some time out for yourself, to identify your own personal wellbeing needs, and finding strategies to cope is so important. The wellbeing programme available on the Wellbeing Hub may have some valuable advice and information relevant to your own personal needs, so please do check it out and take that time you need.
