College raises concerns around allocation of trainee posts in NHS England

28 Jan 2021

President, Professor Jackie Taylor has expressed concern and disappointment regarding the distress being caused due to lack of clarity around IMY3 stand-alone posts in NHS England.

President, Professor Jackie Taylor has expressed concern and disappointment regarding the distress being caused due to lack of clarity around IMY3 stand-alone posts in NHS England.

The issue was raised in direct correspondence from trainee representatives seeking clarity on the planning and decisions that were made in allocating the IMY3 places. IMT trainees had been told guaranteed posts would be allocated, and for many, this guarantee has not been met.

Our College believes it is essential that the guarantee of post allocation is honoured. More doctors are now seeking IMY3 posts, and at a time when there is a clear need to expand our workforce, it is important that funding is identified to resource these posts.  We will do all we can to influence this.

In her response, Professor Taylor said:

“We do understand what an awful situation this is, and the adverse impact it is having on the wellbeing and morale of doctors in training. We are committed to supporting and standing up for our trainees, and to practicing what we preach.

“As a College, we do not have executive power to deliver posts, but we do have influence. Please be assured we are doing everything we can to find solutions to this problem, through formal and informal channels.”
