Responding to the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s budget statement today (Wednesday 11th March 2020) , Professor Jackie Taylor, President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow said:

“Our Fellows and Members are working hard across the country to provide the best possible care to patients in often challenging conditions, so we acknowledge the commitment that the government has shown to ensuring that the NHS has all the resources it needs to cope with the current outbreak of COVID-19. It’s important that the funding of £5billion which was announced today is kept under review as the overall situation develops across the UK.

“We also welcome the measures announced today which will go some way to address the pensions crisis faced by the NHS over the past year. It’s vital that the NHS does all it can to retain experienced staff in the system during this time of crisis, and we believe that this today’s announcement will make a positive difference in this regard.

“Our College will continue to do all we can to stand up for the profession and support our membership through this challenging period.”
